With the immense volume of information available to us, why is it when it comes to our instruments that we know less?

The dramatic growth of the internet helped establish many on-line music sellers, but this left a void where the local dealer once did his part to impart the knowledge required to buy a bass or guitar. He told you what to look for, how it was supposed to feel, explained the effects of humidity on the neck or body and you believed everything he had to say and memorized it as if it were scripture.

At least that was how it was for me. This was the time when there were only 7 Guitar Center stores and we were ecstatic about a San Francisco opening. I was lucky to come along in the mid 70's, before computers and the internet. I was also lucky to have someone that knew "stuff" and a want to shove it in my brain. That man was Gary Miller. In the late 1970's, Gary owned a little shop in Vacaville, CA called Monk's Guitar Shop. I was 14, had bought my first guitar (I bought a black Hondo Les Paul copy from Gary) and I wanted to know all there was to know. I was there any chance I could be there. If he was tired of me, he never let on. I should say "they". Gary's wife was there as well and was equally fantastic. After I graduated and left for college, I heard that they closed up shop. Eventually the location of the shop, "the mini-mall" would be torn down for an engineering firm's office.
I don't know whatever happened to Gary and his wife, but I won't ever forget them and what they started.

I hope to provide to you the info that you need, but it wont all come from me.
This site will have a forums page called Opinions Are Like Assholes . I hope that I don't have to explain anything there, but I hope to get real, honest views on any question that pops up.

I will also be bringing back my GEAR GEEK articles, to be published here on this site. GEAR GEEK was originally published in print & on-line in the now defunct Fringe Magazine from 2007 to 2009.

You will find basic care information for newbies and advanced repair information for those daring enough to give it a try. You will also find a links page that will include links to various manufacturers pages, songwriting and music business pages, music software pages and more. Local band sites, schedules and information will be posted too. Also check out my   http://vacaville-guitar-repair.com ,  www.rocinstruments.com site as well as my many other sites.

Thanks,
Bob Capretto
